“Minuit à Paris”

24” x 18” 5-color screen print on Kraft French Paper

Signed and numbered limited edition of 60, $20

Printed at Headlight Hotel, Providence RI

Inspired by Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris

My piece for Gallery 1988’s “The Humorist: A tribute to one of the big screen’s funniest directors, Woody Allen,” which opens Friday, Jan 11, 7-10PM and is open until February 2, 2013.

This is by far my favorite Woody Allen movie, and I wanted to do something that really captured the feel of the movie, as well as to try something a little different. I decided to make a poster that was inspired by 1920’s Parisian Art Deco poster artists, such as Leonetto Cappiello, Cassandre, Jules Chéret, but most specifically referencing the “Au Bon Marché” posters by my favorite from that genre, René Vincent. Even though I felt the movie had a lot of Nouveau elements (predecessor of Art Deco), and the original movie poster utilizes Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” (1889, Post-Impressionist), I think the content of the film (and time frame: 1920’s-ish) was best portrayed via an Art Deco lens. Probably one of my favorite posters that I’ve done so far. Also, the only poster I’ve ever made that my mom likes.

It's great, really great. And Art Noveau was old fashiones in the 20's, but remember that is the time she thinks everything was really awesome, so it fits the movie perfectly. Congrats!
